President - Ying Xu

I am Ying Xu, an Associate Professor in the Department of Building Science at Tsinghua University in China. I joined the university in 2018. Prior to the position, I was Assistant Professor (2009-2015) and tenured Associate Professor (2016-2018) at the University of Texas at Austin in the United States. I received my Ph.D. degree from Virginia Tech in 2009 and M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees from Tsinghua University in China in 2001 and 2004, respectively. My research is focused on understanding the relationships among sources, indoor environments, and human health for indoor pollutants, especially semi-volatile organic compounds. I have been a principal investigator on many research projects and supervised several PhD students who became assistant professors or research scientists and continued their careers in the field of indoor air quality. My research has been funded by the U.S. NSF, NIOSH, EPA, HUD, ASHRAE, and Chinese ODC. I have published over 80 papers in top journals of environmental engineering and in conference proceedings. Two journal publications were selected for special honors, one as the Editors’ Choice Article by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the other in the “Science Selections” by the journal Environmental Health Perspectives. I have served on the editorial board of Indoor Air, Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology, and PLOS ONE. I have been the Chair of ISIAQ STC 11 since 2014. In addition to regular committee meetings, I have successfully organized five STC11 webinars, most which had over 100 attendees. The recorded webinar videos have been posted on the ISIAQ website, which provided valuable e-learning materials for the ISIAQ community. Since 2014, STC11 committee members have doubled and is one of the largest STC committees in the ISIAQ. My professional experiences enable me to consider the whole picture while aiming for the future, use logic and reasoning to identify issues and find feasible solutions, speak professionally in small or large groups, and communicate with others effectively.
